Ombra mai fù opens Handel’s opera Serse (Xerxes, 1738). King Xerxes, alone in his garden, sings a tender song of thanks to the shade of a plane tree. Its long, serene melody became one of Handel’s most famous tunes, known around the world as “Handel’s Largo”. This arrangement for string trio (violin, viola and cello) keeps that broad, singing line and its calm, warm character.
Arranged by Mislav Brajković, a Vienna-based cellist who performs chamber music regularly. It’s a natural companion to the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria in any ceremony programme.
