Gounod’s Ave Maria is one of music’s most famous collaborations across time. In 1853 Charles Gounod improvised a melody over the first Prelude in C Major (BWV 846) from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, written more than a century earlier. The words of the Ave Maria came later, and the result became one of the best-loved pieces for weddings and church services ever written.
This arrangement for string trio (violin, viola and cello) keeps Bach’s gently flowing harmonies and lets Gounod’s melody soar above them.
Arranged by Mislav Brajković, a Vienna-based cellist who performs chamber music regularly. It’s a staple for any string trio that plays weddings and ceremonies.
