Nimrod (from Enigma Variations, Op. 36) for 6 Cellos by Edward Elgar
Nimrod is the heart of Elgar’s Enigma Variations (Op. 36, Variation IX). It’s a musical portrait of his close friend and publisher Augustus Jaeger, whose surname means “hunter” in German, hence Nimrod, the mighty hunter of the Old Testament. Its slow, noble build has made it one of the most moving pieces in the repertoire, and in Britain it’s played every year at the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph.
Six cellos suit it perfectly. The instrument’s warm sound across its whole range, from deep bass to singing tenor, gives the music real weight and glow.
Arranged by Mislav Brajković, a Vienna-based cellist: written by a cellist, for cellists, with every part written with the instrument in mind. It works for a cello sextet or for a larger cello choir with several players per part.
